The Results of the Technological Workshop in Chile for Mining Industry Experts

A seminar on the application of latest technologies and equipment for the extraction, processing, and transportation of copper, iron, and molybdenum ores was held from March 26 to April 1, 2017 in Santiago, Chile.

The seminar was attended by nine specialists from mining enterprises of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The seminar began with a visit to the head office of the world’s largest copper producer, Corporacion Nacional del Cobre de Chile (Codelco).

In the next five working days, the participants visited Kairos Mining, a system integrator of engineering solutions for mining enterprises; Orica-Chile, the largest supplier of industrial explosives and initiation systems for mining and construction as well as SRK Consulting.

During the visit to the world’s largest underground mine, El Teniente, the participants inspected the mine site, the underground equipment of the mine, as well as lifting, cooling, and ventilation systems. Then they visited El Teniente’s enrichment plant, which has been operating since 1904. The specialists that hosted the group talked about the control and automation systems and the reagents they use. They also discussed the peculiarities of heap leaching of oxidized ores and the methods of extraction of the copper sulfide concentrate.

The Chief Technical Officer of the Remote Control Center of the El Teniente mine described the monitoring system for the operation of drilling rigs, quarry dump trucks, automation of engineering support for open and underground mining operations and automation of technological processes in difficult mountain conditions.

To complete the picture and to be able to conduct a comparative analysis of various forms of management of Chilean mining enterprises, the delegation visited a private mine Minera Las Cenizas and the enrichment plant operated by the mine. The mine is located 160 km from Santiago in the town of Cabildo (Valparaiso region). The participants were able to discuss the challenges that are similar despite different mountain and climatic conditions in Chile and Kazakhstan and share their experiences in dealing with them.
